about
The thoughtful words of this carval, considered amongst the best of this uniquely Manx genre, were probably written by the Revd. Thomas Christian of Marown at the end of the 18th century.
He is best known as the author of a version of Pargys Caillit, Paradise Lost. The practice of the unaccompanied singing of home-composed ‘carvals' on Old Christmas Eve slowly disappeared during the 19th century.
The choir version is a very recent setting of some of the verses, set to music by Annie.
lyrics

Before the heavens had been formed, before the bright angels were created… what was in existence ?
